Volcano Terminology

 

  • Ejecta: The material, and debris that are ejected from an erupting volcano.
  • Eruption: The explosive, or slow emission of solids, liquids, and gases from a volcano.
  • Eruption Cloud: A column of gases, ash and rock particles rising from a vent or crater.
  • Eruptive Vent: An opening out of which gases, and other volcanic materials are emitted.
  • Extinct Volcano: A volcano that shows no signs of ever erupting again.
  • Fissures: Elongated cracks, or fractures along the slopes of a volcano. 
  • Flank Eruption: An eruption occurring on the side of the volcano as opposed to its peak.
  • Fumarole: A vent from which steam and gases are emitted in both active and dormant volcanoes.
  • Horizontal Blast: A lateral eruption.
  • Hot Spot: A weak sction in the Earth's crust where magma rises to the surface.
  • Hypabyssal: A rock mass created by a shallow intrusion of magma.
  • Ignimbrite: A rock created by the welding together of ash and other volcanic material.
  • Intrusion: The forcing of magma into an earlier rock formation.
  • Lahar: A a torrential mudflow of water mixed with volcanic debris.
  • Lava: Magma which has, or is coming out of a volcanic crater or fissure.
  • Lava Dome: A dome-shaped mass of congealed lava, formed by multiple flows.
  • Lava Flow: The flow of lava from a volcanic crater of fissure.
  • Lava Fountain: A rhythmic vertical fountain-like eruption of lava.
  • Lava Pond: A lake of molten lava.
  • Lava Shields: A shield volcano made of basaltic lava.
  • Lava Tube: A pipe-like tunnel formed to drain the molten lava trapped within the cooling lava flow.
